What is this Gateway site being  used for now?It is a bloody eyesore and has been  for 25 years. What we have now is it  is being used as a shooting gallery for junkies and needs to be cleaned up.

The property is next to a Power Plant and a Paper Mill and is really not the place to build any type of tourist attraction. Those people who propose this need to get real. This is more than likely the reason over the past  13 years why developers have walked away.

Time for the "Suits" to accept the fact that this Gateway Project is just that a pipe dream and time to move forward. This is one of those pipe dreams where a few  people were hoping to make a lot of money off this project.

The City should turn this gateway site in The Proposed Park that people want (there is a petition out  collecting  signatures.)The other part turned into an RV Park and leased out by the City to one of the Local RV Parks. That way you would have tourists parking their RV's and enjoying the Casino and the downtown and  of course the Hub Trail..

I think if Condos or apartments were the plan, it would have been done by now.  Besides I think that's the idea for the soon to be vacant hospital site.

Thanks for the tip, Craig.  I'm well aware of the fact that Bellevue and Clergue parks are well used, but why do we need a THIRD park within 5 km's of one another?

And sure, it'd be great if OLG or ACR put up some money but I seriously don't see it happening.  The Station Mall will benefit too, do you expect we'll receive anything from them?  While we're at it, we should probably start collecting money from local gas stations and restaurants, too.  Maybe you should get out more -- just because they're gonna benefit from it, doesn't mean they're gonna pay for it.

As for the RV park, this is the worst idea yet.  Why would we want a trailer park to be the first thing people see when they drive through the city?

Personally I think building an RV park on the on the proposed Gateway site is a terrible idea, and would render it useless to the residents of the Sault Ste. Marie,  the people who should enjoy it the most.  When it comes to undeveloped waterfront property in the downtown core, this is pretty much all we have got to work with, and surely there is a better solution than an RV park.  There is ample room for RV parking at the mall or at the Casino, or at KOA campgrounds.  If the Casino wants to draw in more tourists and cater to RV enthusiasts all they need to do is add RV hook ups (power, water) to accommodate temporary parking while playing at the Casino.  Lets start a petition against this proposed developement and see how many people sign it!

Berto, don't take it personally - I'm not saying I want to see a park there - all I'm saying is make it into a park now and get some value of it for the community until or should I say IF a developer comes along.  I know one of the plans is to move the ACR train depot to the site - should the tax payers be paying for that? I don't think so, unless there's a bigger plan for the site - which I know there isn't at the moment. My whole logic for the site is -  if a tourist attraction is going there - if the locals like it - the tourists will follow.

OK  some  of you do not want a RV Park or a Park on this Gateway site. Then what do you suggest  this land  be used for?

How  much taxpayer's money has been spent on this in studies Etc? Now because of failed attempts EDC/Tourism SSM want to spend more on Plans.

What should be done is the empty lot  cleaned up and put up for sale and the City move forward away from this whole Tourist attraction idea.

This site  could  be used for an Industrial Site of some kind just another idea .You got any better ideas put in this forum.Let hear of some great ideas for this Gateway site other than a Tourist Attraction or a Park.

One thing that is clear and that everyone agrees upon is that the site in question needs to be cleaned up.  What's unclear is if the site is currently contaminated and the estimated cost of cleaning it up to a point where it is marketable.  I don't think a single dime more should be spent on research into the development of this site, it should go towards the clean up and it should have a long time ago.  If the City is still incapable of coming up with an idea for a viable business for the Gateway site, then we need to fill council with some representatives who possess savvy business skills and aren't afraid to commit to an idea, and execute it!  Am I wrong here?

RON- You said, "The property is next to a Power Plant and a Paper Mill and is really not the place to build any type of tourist attraction."

So, then what makes you think people want to park their RVs next to that? Why park an RV in town around so much lights and concrete, when you can drive 15-45 minutes further to have a REAL camping experience.

You're too much.  Roll Eyes

I for one certainly don't agree with everything Ron has to say,  I do however commend him for stepping up to the plate and fighting for what he believes in.  Where are all the other runners?  Regardless of how much we agree or disagree with someone, we should never lower ourselves by resorting to name calling.  Also, we should never knock someone down for doing what they believe is the "BEST" that they can do,  this is very counter productive and in the end it gets us nowhere.  We should let the ballots speak for themselves, the results will be much louder than any name calling.
