RC:  I like the tunnel idea, but, what about those in manual wheelchairs?  The tunnels, one at Conmee Ave. and one at Albert St. W. would be great if a solution to the wheelchair dilemma can be found.  I cannot answer for the habits of all drivers, although, the driving privilege should be respected.

Most drivers are now aware of the Carmen's Way - Conmee Ave. intersection and really should approach it with caution.  You are right on the money saying that not all drivers are cautious all the time.  That is the reason for the accidents at this intersection, not the road design as there is more than an appropriate field of vision. in both directions.

The street tunnels I have seen have either been underground with an appropriate ramp system for those that cannot negotiate stairs, or have been built above ground and had a lift system like an elevator.  Yes, the second is expensive, don't get me wrong, but it works.  There were a series of horrible accidents in Dryden,  Ontario when I was a kid (it was over the span of many years while I was growing up).  People were getting killed while trying to cross the Trans Canada that runs through the city.  Anyway, that one has a stairwell and an elevator if i am not mistaken, and is made of 'glass' so you can see the stairwells and the crossing itself which helps with theft and whatnot.  I can't find a picture on online, but for anyone who has driven through, it is right near the information center with the moose statue outside.

It would have been ideal for them to consider a pedestrian 'underpass' when building Carmen's...they are a lot easier to build than a vehicle underpass.

Hey Concerned kid? It's only $300,000 for lights....how about you pay for them so that the taxpayer doesn't have to pay for something that is unnecessary

Time to send Canada's worst driver show an invitation to come and do a special here in Sault Ste Marie.....I can't remember the lady from here that was so bad they just took her license.
One down more to go!  Great material for a whole series!

The problem with crossing Carmans Way at Conmee Ave. is that everyone is in a hurry, they can,t judge distance or speed properly, and also they are crossing four lanes of traffic,

Here's an idea-- T R A F F I C L I G H T S ! -- I know they're $300,000 but our council already throws countless money away already, why not throw some away to PREVENT accidents. Listen, I'm willing to bet my yearly savings that if traffic lights are not installed, then within a year, 5 accidents will occur.. Any takers? Wink

Not a good thing to be gambling with your yearly savings... this could lead to a gambling habbit... maybe you should just say you would make a friendly bet... LOL
