It’s okay if you have a hefty income and don’t have to worry about where your next meal is coming from, but for those who are on fixed incomes and are on the poverty level or below, it just adds to the stress and health issues that the Provincial Government says are consuming the Tax dollars.

I understand where the above quote is coming from but I still have a bit of a problem with it.  By no means am I or my family rich, yet our income does allow us to "not have to worry about where our next meal is coming from".  However, I don't think that makes it "okay" to tax us more while being not okay to tax the less well off.  As income increases, not only do taxes increase, but the percentage of your income paid in taxes increase both federally and provincially.  I believe I pay quite enough tax as it is (especially since the Liberals have hit us with the massive healthcare tax while telling us they wouldn't raise taxes if elected).

While you're entitled to your opinion and I share your concern for those less well off due to this HST tax grab, I would appreciate it if you didn't dismiss increased taxes on the rest of us just because they don't necessarily bankrupt us.

Good read Mike. Time for northern Ontario to separate.

By raising the tax we seniors are getting less money. Can you live on $1,800 pension per month and house taxes are way over $2,000 per yr. The only way we can live is our Seniors pension. Other than that we would have to sell our house. I have already e mailed the McGinty gov. to tell them I will no longer vote for them. In fact I won't vote Conservative either....they are in this HST tax together. Maybe we need a few years of the NDP to mess things up and bring these other 2 parties to the peoples attention. Thats it...... Roll Eyes Cry

Nice weather outside. Perhaps an H.S.T. protest walk down the middle of Queen st., from M.P.P to M.P., might draw a bit of attention.

That's a good idea Ranger...and it actually targets (and affects) the people whose attention we want to get instead of blockading highways or shutting down bridges which does nothing to inconvenience the government but does draw a lot of ire from the general public.

If anyone wants to stage a protest in front of our MPP's office, let me know when and I'll be there!

Now let me get this straight. $45,000. payout for each Ontario employee to become a Federal employee to collect our H.S.T. for a total of 25 million. Please tell me that I am mistaken. Will Queen St. be wide enough for a friendly get-together. Forget about just shopping across the bridge, how about moving there.

Moving there sounds great but unemployment is very high...where would you work?
Grass on the other side of the bridge isn't any greener than here...the Sault has taken hits in the down turn but for the most part generally we have faired well.

not a bad argument on Caruso's behalf....but it is a bit illogical....to get back at the government you are going to punish local retailers by shopping across the border.....the NDP must have thought this one up LOL ....yeah so we're taxed...and taxed...big deal...I'd rather live in Canada where we are taxed at a higher rate but a 4 day hospital stay or minor surgery won't cost me my house and every penny I own. Hey.. Canada could be Greece right now....low taxes for so long with no cuts in services and wages etc..and the economy/country is collapsing because they are Billions and billions in debt...

So I punish them for trying to save money to buy groceries.  THey've been overcharging me since I first started working.  Price of gas on our side, $1.019.  I save at least $10 on every fill up.  Stick that in your gas tank.

o.k...make up your mind...are you mad at the retailers or the government for imposing the tax??? This is about cross border shopping because of the HST...not because you feel you are being overcharged for your beer cigarettes and gas...your arguement is weak at best... Maybe you should stop working then....that way they will stop overcharging you...LOL nice arguement...stick to the topic....

Take your blinders off.  I am not going to have a discussion with someone who can only see one side of an arguement.  Have a good day.

There is never ‘a reason’ to cross boarder shop never mind as you suggest there is more than one by heading your piece with the title “Another Reason … ”
Everything you need to buy can be bought locally at competitive prices.

That said then the HST is disgusting shameful tax addition that will prove the downfall of the Liberal Government in Ontario.
With all hopes and prayers the Ontario Liberals should go the way of the dictatorships of the Mike Harris & equally as bad Brian Mulroney conservative regimes of the past.

At the end of this discussion when all is said and done it is the governments that are teaching the people to lie cheat steal & spend their money in the States.  And with the internet and the postal boxes in the Michigan Sault it is easy to shop to shop where there is only a 6 % tax.
I am oppose to cross boarder shipping and do not do it, as a retailer that was shut down because of cross boarder shopping a decade ago, I still hold resentment for that activity but with border guards leading the charge followed by government employees and school teachers, it is hard not to jump on train.

Translation....you're right...I have no way to win this arguement as it is weak at best...I will however continue to spend my money in another country then complain when stores close here...

I don't pretend to know much about this, but it seems to me that the HST is no big deal. we already pay both taxes on 95% of what we purchase. It seems to me that all they are doing is combining the two taxes, which we already  pay, into one. Seems to me it will be easier for business to work with as they don't have to keep two sets of books. Yes there are some things that will go up. big deal. We live a lifestyle far superior to 90% of the world population. complainers travel the world and see what you have. Just saying is all.

While we all wish to participate in the benifits of a social government it would seem some wish to avoid paying for those benifits. Everything from health care to garbage collection costs and those monies need be gleened from the tax payer. Stop paying tax and loose your benifits, simple. By circumventing the tax man they simply look for more creative ways to collect, there-by hurting more vulnerable souls. A higher standard, a higher price. One could always move to the States if it seems so atractive but that would entail leaving so much behind, wouldn't it?

  no spell check, sorry.
