Put on by the Sault College Respect Committee which is made up of students, faculty and staff, the purpose of the event was to promote tolerance and awareness for different cultures and people.
Over 20 different groups had displays and performances.
The goal of the day was to "raise public awareness within the college and larger community of diversity among students and staff" said Tessa Pino, Student Success Mentor and co-ordinator of Diversity Day.
There is beauty in the diversity of the Sault College community. Respect is a priority we have adopted of all people on campus. By applying respect to one's every day life at Sault College, we want students to have a positive student experience and ultimately
achieve their pure potential.
"We want diversity represented in our promotional materials including view books and brochures. We like to showcase real students and ensure that everyone feels welcome", said Susan Hunter, Director of Promotion Services at Sault College.
As well as exhibitors who showcased cultural foods, music, practices and beliefs, there were demonstrations of belly dancing, Tai Chi, Native storytellers, the YMCA Seniors "Sit Fit" club, Ontario March of Dimes, Learning Disabilities Association of Sault Ste. Marie, New to the Sault and Metis Nation of Ontario.
Chartwells Food Operations served cultural dishes from Canada, Asia, Mexico, Louisiana, the Caribbean, and Italy in the cafeteria. The Outback offered a cultural feast of Indian tacos, gyros and much more.
Sault College enjoys a wide variety of culture within it's walls and events such as Diversity Day help to celebrate and recognize those differences as well as the similarities between different cultures of the world.
