The Environment Award honours businesses that have made a difference in making our environment better, whether it be reduction of pollution or waste, energy efficiency, new environmental or energy technology applications, best practices, or introducing an innovative program that reduces waste in our city.
“Sault College is one of twenty-four community Colleges in the province of Ontario with the mandate to ‘provide access to education that is responsive to business, community and industry needs,’ stated Dean Colin Kirkwood. “In recent years we have placed ourselves at the forefront of conservation and energy management activities locally. We have a diverse range of Natural Environment and Outdoor Studies courses concentrating on renewable energy, conservation and management of natural resources,” he added.
President Dr. Ron Common was pleased that the College received recognition for its eco-conscious approaches. “Sault College is an active partner in the Sault’s interest in becoming recognized for its renewable energy options,” stated Common. “Visitors and residents alike now see our 30kW wind turbine on campus. This learning tool offers students both research and academic opportunities while also powering “The Outback” Student Life Centre.”
Recently, the College has also embarked on a number of projects to reduce the impact we have on the environment while improving energy efficiencies. Examples of such remodeling and upgrading include the building management system which more effectively controls heating, ventilation and air conditioning; a college-wide lighting retrofit which includes energy–efficient fixtures and sensors; renovations to 18 restrooms that include energy-efficient hand-dryers and low-flush urinals, and roofing upgrades to reduce building heat loss.
Additionally, the College encourages participation in ‘green activities’ and supports its Going Green Committee which has established a website that enables communication amongst students and staff on environmental issues and reducing the College’s carbon footprint.
