Citing ever increasing Police harassment and rising costs, the organizer is calling it quits on Hempfest after this year.
Rob Waddell, organizer of the annual event issued a release Wednesday indicating this would be the last year of the infamous festival.
"Yes that's right, Hempfest is saying good-bye. Due to the ever increasing Police Harassment of those attending the event and those whom live in the area we have decided that this will be the last year for it so we don't aggravate the neighbourhood of PoplarDale with the unnecessary police road blocks and intrusion into their peaceful way of live out in the country." the release said.
The event, held just outside of Sault Ste. Marie attracted hundreds of people from all over Northern Ontario to raise awareness of the benefits of Medical Marijuana, speak about the injustices suffered by those who need the plant to increase their quality of life and to provide relief from the illness that suffers them.
However in recent years, police forces in the area have made entering and leaving the festival grounds harder with searches and laying charges.
The four day event, being called "farewell to an era" will be held August 27 - 30 with tickets selling for $40.00 per person, including camping.
"Thursday Night will be movie night, come on in and find a spot for the weekend and enjoy some great movies, meet up with those whom you see but once a year and relax and get ready for Friday and Saturday." Waddell said.
" We will have some great speakers over the weekend this year and awesome entertainment as well. Featuring Killin Time Band on Friday Night and Mama Kim on Saturday with a Tribute to Aerosmith. And of course our last Cannabis Olympics will be on Saturday Afternoon."
