The Art Gallery of Algoma (AGA) is hosting the 1st Annual Auction & Loan Gala on Saturday, November 28th at 7 p.m.. All proceeds from the event support this non-profit public institution’s activities which include: children’s art making classes, exhibitions by artists from throughout the region and a variety of free public services.
The Auction & Loan Gala comes just two weeks after the AGA’s Grand Re-opening, which attracted over five hundred people who reveled in the Gallery’s newly renovated spaces and community-oriented programming.
Those individuals interested in attending the Auction & Loan Gala can purchase tickets for $75 each at the Gallery or by calling: 705-949-9067.
This fundraiser’s action packed itinerary includes: a live auction, two draws for free art loans, five food services, a complimentary beverage, musical entertainment and a $30 charitable tax receipt.
The sale component of the evening is hosted by Guest Auctioneer Murray Finn, who will take bids on fourteen works of art ranging in value from $500 to $5,000.
Among the nationally known artists with pieces on the block are Norval Morrisseau, Roberta Bondar, Richard Attila Lukacs, Marcus Leatherdale, Julie Oaks and Carl Beam, while the local artistic scene is represented by Taimi Poldmaa, John Methany, Ken MacDougall, Noni Boyle, John Hornstein, Barbara Fournier and Linda Finn.
All ticket holders for this event are also eligible to win a free six month art loan from the Art Gallery of Algoma’s extensive holding of rental works by local artists.
Over the course of the evening the Gallery’s Director Dr. Curtis Collins will conduct two draws and winning ticket holders will be able to choose from over thirty paintings, prints and photographs hung in a French salon manner on the Main Gallery’s southernmost wall.
Among those artists represented in this free art loan draw are: Cathy Redmond, Sheila Maki, Nancy Mane, Ken McDougall, Elisabeth Lien, John Leonard, John Laford, Leslie King, John Keast, Corol Jokinen, Joe Gagnier, Linda Finn, Chris Dusette, Susan Chow, Ken Bradford and Anne Meredith.
Guests will thrill to the lively bidding on auction items and anticipate the rush of winning a free art loan, all while trays of fine food prepared by Sault Saint Marie’s best restaurants circulate through the Gallery.
The evening’s colours are purple and black, as butler-style service begins with a vegetarian dish courtesy of the city’s newest hip eatery on Queen Street the Dish Espresso Bar & Café.
Art lovers will then be treated to a special Thai chicken recipe by the Gran Festa Ristorante that has owner Jason so very excited.
Sarah Birkenhaurer, the new head chef at the Delta Hotel restaurant on the waterfront, follows with her tantalizing tuna creation.
And not to be missed is the “Soo’s” favorite chef Rosetta from A Thymley Manner with her offering of succulent duck. Such an impeccable aesthetic-gastronomic experience closes with a night cap of rich coffees and chocolate desserts courtesy of Vinaissance Wine & Food.
Throughout this celebration of cultural exchange guests can imbibe upon a wonderful selection of Niagara Riesling, Merlot and Gewurztraminer wines made by Angels Gate Winery in Beamsville, Ontario.
Fine art, wine, food and desserts are rounded out by the jazz stylings of local musicians Frank and Rachelle Deresti, who will be playing high above the crowd from the Gallery’s new Window-Front Stage.
Such a spectacular event is a first for the city and the Sault Star’s media sponsorship of this bold AGA initiative is greatly appreciated. And as Mary Ledlow, a local food and wine critic as well as the event’s co-organizer, has exclaimed; “The AGA Auction & Loan Gala is going to be the party of the century!”
