
Seventeen Northern Storm swimmers travelled to Elliot Lake to compete in the North Eastern Ontario meet held there on February 20-21, 2010. Craig Bovingdon (15) led the team with first place finishes in all six of his events. Following closely in his wake were Christa Wright (12) and Spencer Bordin (12). Wright took first place in the 200m Butterfly, 200m IM and 400m IM races, and finished in the top four of every race she swam. Bordin earned himself two first place finishes in the 100m Breaststroke and 200m IM, with top 3 finishes in all six races.
NSAC enjoyed spectacular results from the girls competing in the 10-and-under category. Trinity Neshawabin (10) finished with three 1st place finishes in the 100m Free, 100m Back and 50m Butterfly, while Danielle Morin (10) secured a 1st in the 100m IM, a 2nd in the 50m Breaststroke, and a 3rd place finish for her efforts in the 200m Free. Morin finished in the top 6 in each of her six events. Grace Avery (8) brought home three 3rd place finishes in the 200m Free, 50m Back and 50m Breaststroke, and placed in the top eight for all races. Olivia Starzomski (7) swam to two 4th place finishes in the 25m Breaststroke, and the 25m Butterfly, finishing in the top nine for all the events she swam. Azaria Neshawabin (8) secured a 5th place ribbon in the 25m Butterfly and swam to many personal best times in her events.
The Northern Storm boys competing in the 11-and-under category were similarly impressive. Desmond Wood-Anderson (9) secured a 1st place finish in the 100m IM, and second place ribbons in both the 200m Free and 50m Breaststroke events. Wood-Anderson finished in the top five in all of his events. Parker Simpson (10) secured a 5th place finish in the 100m Butterfly and top 11 finishes for all events. Reilan Dupuis (10) earned himself a 3rd place ribbon in the 50m Breaststroke event, and swam to top 10 finishes in all races, while Myles MacDonald (11) raced to a 3rd place finish in the 25m Free, and finished with many personal best swims.
Kaytie Sillanpaa (11) competed in the 11-year-old girls’ category, finishing with a 2nd in the 200m Backstroke and a 3rd in the 200m Freestyle. Sillanpaa earned top six finishes in all of her races. Mychael-Anne Francis (12) and Kathleen Trussler (12) competed in the 12-year-old girls’ category. Francis secured two 1st place finishes in the 100m Free and 100m Butterfly events, while Trussler earned a 2nd place finish in the 200m Butterfly and top five finishes in all six of her races.
Colin Bovingdon (12) earned a 3rd place ribbon in the 50m Free, and top eight finishes in all six of the events he competed in. Sarah Wright (13) finished with two 2nd place finishes in the 50m Free and 200m IM, and two 3rd place ribbons for her efforts in both the 400m Free and 400m IM. Wright swam to top seven finishes for all six of the events she swam this weekend.
NSAC relays are a sight to behold, and something everyone should have the opportunity to watch at least once in a lifetime! These relay events bring out the best in all Storm swimmers and give them the opportunity to display their team spirit which is second to none. The relay teams swimming in the girls’ 10-and-under category brought home a 1st place ribbon in the 200m Medley, and the 2nd in the 200m Free. The girls swimming in the 11-12 age category secured two 2nd place relay finishes. The boys aged 11-and-under brought home 1st and 2nd place finishes in the Medley and Free relay events, while the boys in the 12-13 category swam to 4th and 6th places.
This weekend, three swimmers qualified to compete in the Provincial Championship Meet taking place in Etobicoke. Tyler Smith (13), Mychael-Anne Francis (12) and Trinity Neshawabin (10) are currently travelling with head-coach Nancy Day to compete in this event. NSAC is proud to have Tyler Smith represent his team at the National Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for a report on the success of our swimmers at these prestigious championship events. The rest of the team continues to practice diligently in preparation for the upcoming Team Championship meet in April. The long course season is underway and NSAC has many seasoned swimmers who will guide their young teammates through this new competitive experience for the first time.
