By the Knights of Alloy Robotics Team

The Algoma chapters of The Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) and Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT), as part of National Engineering Week, invited the local robotics team, The Knights of Alloy, to give a demonstration of high school robotics to local mall patrons.

The team, now in its 6th year with the FIRST competition league (www.usfirst.org) came with three of its five previous robots, all of which had been to Atlanta for the World Robotics Championships. Members of the public were invited to drive and study the custom made machines, and learn about the FIRST program, while members of Grandview’s Provincial Champion Lego robotics team also demonstrated their miniature Lego robot to interested crowds.

Particularly thrilled were the dozens of youngsters who were drawn to last year’s entry “Holly, the Wickett Bot” (named after former Korah principal Holley Wickett), who laughed with delight while throwing and catching the orbit balls used during last year’s competition game. Some even tried their hands at operating the custom designed and built robot, using the video-game controllers to wheel the robot around the mall floor and demonstrating the ease at which the robot design could accomplish the task in even novice hands.

The ADSB student team competes next month in two qualifying Regional tournaments in an attempt to earn an invitation to this year’s World Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.
