Dear SooNews.ca:
My name is Mario Rocchetta, and I am a teacher with the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board. This summer, I have had the opportunity to teach students in Grades 7 and 8 as part of our Board's Summer School Program at Holy Angels Learning Centre.
I am very proud of our Grade 7/8 students who not only showed development in the areas of literacy and numeracy, but who also demonstrated our Catholic values by raising money for our local Soup Kitchen. Through organizing and running a school variety store, along with various pizza and pasta days, my students raised an impressive $500.00 in just four short weeks.
Our principal, Wayne Greco, invited MP Tony Martin along with representatives from the Soup Kitchen Community Centre to visit our classroom so that we could personally present our donation. Today, accompanied by representatives from the Soup Kitchen, Mr. Martin visited with the students and provided them with a motivational speech during which he shared the importance of helping others in our community. We were also excited that he brought with him Megan Leslie, MP of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to share in the good news!
For all of us in the community, this is a great reminder that within our youth lies a sincere goodness and tremendous potential to transform the world, one good deed at a time.
