TRISH NEW TO THE SAULT

‘Passport to Unity’, the Sault’s only multi-cultural festival, aims at bringing our community together in celebration and discovery of the many diverse cultures and traditions that exist within Sault Ste. Marie. The annual festival has been capturing and celebrating the diverse traditions, cultures and countries of origin that make up the fabric of our community since 2006, and continues to be embraced with increased enthusiasm each year. Hosted by NEW TO THE SAULT© and the Sault Community Career Centre, the event brings together many local cultural groups, performers, artists, individuals and families while also welcoming newcomers to the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

The goal of this event every year is to foster a sense of inclusion and acceptance for the growing diverse community. Our efforts are embraced through a day devoted to indulgence in delectable food dishes from around the world, a captivating selection of traditional music, dance, and recreation performances, and the showcasing of art and craft booths which feature handmade creative pieces. This event is sure to engage and delight both the young and old!

In addition, we would like to send a special invitation to all artists or craftspeople who would be interested in having a vendor booth at the event, to display and sell their own creative pieces at this year’s ‘Passport to Unity’. For a small fee, vendors are given a booth and keep one hundred percent of the revenue made at the event.

As part of the festival, NEW TO THE SAULT© is putting together “A Taste of Unity”, a multicultural cookbook which will be available for purchase at the event. The cookbook, which will feature recipes from the diverse range of cultures present in Sault Ste. Marie, is designed to reflect the spirit of the event, with proceeds going to our local soup kitchen.

The 4th Annual Passport to Unity Festival will be held on Sunday March 21, 2010 from 12 to 5pm. Admission to the event is $2.00 and children twelve and under are free. Visit www.newtothesault.com or call (705) 945-1600 for more information.

Passport to Unity is funded by Employment Ontario, the City of Sault Ste Marie’s Discover the Sault Web Portal (www.discoverthesault.ca), the Local Immigration Partnership, the Province of Ontario, and Citizenship & Immigration Canada.
